In a week when Christians may find their thoughts turning to political power and its scope – i.e. how much power did Pilate really have? – a group of us gathered to formulate some questions to be asked of our potential MSPs at the ‘Christians Together in Stirling’ Hustings I’m chairing next Tuesday. (7.30 pm at the Albert Hall for any locals who are interested).
There are some ‘obvious’ issues such as spending cuts, alcohol control and assisted suicide, but other possible ones raise the question of how much MSPs can actually do. Of course, some issues are not devolved – their powers to control human trafficking are limited, for example.
But what about their ability to change culture? Something that concerns me is the early sexualisation of children – padded bras for 7 year olds on sale at Tesco’s. But is there anything our politicians can do about it? Perhaps it’s a good reminder that we ourselves have a big responsibility for ‘hearts and minds’ – we should not devolve everything onto Holyrood.
